OUR PEÑARROYA´S VIRGIN FESTIVAL
  1.  TO BEGIN
We are going to taking about one important festivity from La Solana , well-known by everybody.
If you travel to our town in September, you are invited to visit it.
It is celebrated arounnd the Castle of Peñarroya which dates from the 13 th century. This castle is from Muslim origin, but it became Christian in 1215.

2. OUR FESTIVITY: PEÑARROYA VIRGIN.
The first week in September, everyone goes for a walk till the Castle (40 kms away) to wait the Virgin. After that, we go back to La Solana celebrating a procession.

The following week, several events in honor of the Virgin are held to welcome the new season of grape harvest.

3. THE EVENTS
  • PROCESSIONS
We wear tradicional customes and  people from the town go with the Virgin and a musis band (where Maria plays) follows her as well.

  • TRADITIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVALS
Our typical dance is called the "jota", (like the letter j), which has been danced traditionaly while people were collectting the grape.
  • ARTS AND CRAFTS
You can find exhibitions of typical products. Here you can see Julia´s grandfather making some basket.
  •  GASTRONOMIC CONTESTS.
Everyone tastes in the Main Square typical dishes cooked above all in the grape harvest season, for example:

Flower
Gachas
Moje
Pisto
Spanish omelette
These dishes are tasted with our wonderful wines.
4. TO FINISH
Finally, on Sunday a kind of bidding takes place in the Main Square. It consists of an offer of the best products that have been collected, also of typical sweets and money to thank for the goods received throughout the year.

In all events, the anthem to the Virgin is sang. You can listen to it in this video. CLICK
